Get involved

Our volunteers play a huge part in running the Castle. From practical on-site support, helping with events, offering guided tours and research, there’s a volunteer role for everyone.

We work with partners across the community and city to host events and activities for families and local residents, as well as to promote Hylton Castle and Sunderland to a wider regional audience.

Whether you already have the skills or need training, volunteering at the Castle is a great way to meet new people, get engaged and keep active, whilst also giving something back to your community.

You can find out more about some of the roles we offer below:

Tearoom Volunteers

The Tearoom is hugely popular and thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, we provide exceptional service to all our visitors.

Events Volunteer

If you can throw yourself into a fast-paced environment and want to help us supporting private celebrations, evening concerts and large-scale weekend events, an events volunteer role could be perfect for you to gain experience in working in events and hospitality.

Castle Guides

For those more interested in the history of the Castle, you might like to look at joining our Tour Team. Our dedicated guides offer tours of the castle, providing an insight into its past and some of the people who lived here during its 600 year history.

Learning Volunteers

Join our learning volunteers if you are interested in helping to engage young people with their local history, as part of our educational workshops.

The Castle offers sessions for schools, as well as educational holiday activities and story time sessions. This is a fantastic opportunity for people interested in gaining experience in an educational setting, former teachers or anyone else passionate about passing on their love of history to the next generation.

Young Volunteers

Hylton Castle welcomes young people to come and join us. We can offer placement opportunities for work experience, or for extra-curricular commitments such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Volunteering with us is a fun and rewarding experience, and it gives you an opportunity to showcase all your fabulous skills and talents!

If you, your school, group or organisation would like to volunteer, please contact the Hylton Castle Department at Community Opportunities on 0191 5373231. Training and support is provided for all volunteers.
